her name was julia Brace. She became the first deaf-blind person in America to receive instruction, and her story is told, in part, in a sheet of manuscript now ...
Brace was born in 1807 and was one of the first known educated deaf and blind individuals. After a severe case of typhus, she lost her sense of sight and hearing at the tender age of 5. As might be expected, she didn’t immediately realize what was going on. At first, she wondered why her mother didn’t turn on the lamp, thinking the night had veiled the visible world.
Julia Brace (1807-1884) became deaf and blind at the age of five due to a high fever from contacting typhus. Despite this, she stayed inquisitive and independent. She was offered a place at Hartford Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb (currently known as the American School for the Deaf).
